India ranks 3rd in the global ranking of pharma production by volume and 14th by value. This shows the relative inexpensiveness of Indian pharma products. There are over 3000 pharma companies in India having over 10,000 manufacturing units. Western India, notably Maharashtra and Gujarat are ahead in this regard. Indian pharma companies supply over 50% of the global demand for various vaccines, 40% of the generic demand for US and 25% of all medicines for UK.   

India occupies an important position in the global pharmaceutical market - It's the world's largest supplier of generic medications, accounting for 20% of the worldwide supply by volume and supplying about 60% of the global vaccination demand.

 

Indian domestic market is estimated to be US$ 42 billion in 2021 and likely to reach US$ 65 billion by 2024. India’s medical devices market stood at US$ 10.36 billion in FY20.  As of August 2021, CARE Ratings expect India's pharmaceutical business to develop at an annual rate of about 11% over the next two years.

 

Pharma retailers enjoy around 16 - 22 percent margin of branded medicines and 20 - 50 percent for generic medicine. For herbal and ayurvedic formulation, the margins are even at a higher level - making distribution a very profitable business for this sector. Along with margins, retailers enjoy benefits of schemes and offers provided by companies. Retailers/pharmacies also enjoy credit facilities provided by companies and/or stockiest
